Volunteer Opportunities

     The Meredith Historical Society is in frequent need of volunteers to help with nearly all aspects of its operations and activities. If you have an interest in working with us, there are numerous ways to do so. Your efforts, however great or small, would be most welcome. The following is a general list of volunteer opportunities. It is hardly comprehensive. If you do not see something that interests you, but you would still like to become involved, please do not hesitate to contact us.

 Opening and Closing of the Museums

-Needed each spring and fall for the Farm Museum and the Main St. Museum. This entails cleaning,  arranging, etc.
-Periodic preparing/cleaning/arranging at the museums for special events such as open houses, presentations to groups, etc.

Special Occasion Set-Ups

 -Halloween display October
-Yard sale preparation each May for the town-wide yard sale.
-Holiday decorations at the Main St. Museum

Routine Maintenance

-Needed each spring and fall for the Farm Museum and the Main St. Museum. This entails cleaning,  arranging, etc.
-Periodic preparing/cleaning/arranging at the museums for special events such as open houses, presentations to groups, etc.
-Snow removal from sidewalks and small driveway
-Assist team with minor repair work on the museums. Light carpentry and painting for the most part.

Hosting

-Greeting the public at either of the museums.
-Hosting visitors at the Farm Museum. Two-hour shifts on available Saturdays from June through September.
-Hosting at the Main Street Museum. Flexible schedule for anyone interested.

Genealogical Committee

-Research individuals and family genealogy
-Help inventory Meredith’s cemeteries
-Help collate our records and resources (e.g. collection of family Bibles)
-Help locate historic houses; list/locate churches

History Committee

-Researching historical topics relating to Meredith, either one’s own interests or suggested topics
-Preparation of historical talking points for museum hosts or docents handling special historical events/tours
-Preparation of historical signage for museum displays
-Preparation of historical articles for the website, newsletter, or stand-alone publication
-Preparation of historical articles for local newspapers

 

Museum Committee

-Assist committee members with various display set-up
-Assist committee members with preservation and conservation of museum display items, pictures, books, clothing, instruments, letters, newspapers, etc.
-Assist with cataloging the collection

 Funding Committee

-Assist with grant writing and other fund raising activities, depending upon interests and expertise

Assistant Treasurer

-An experienced general finance person is needed to take over the role of assistant treasurer to work as the back-up to the treasurer and act in his absence.
-Skills include some type of financial background, comfort with the role, attention to detail.

Communications Committee

-Assist as needed with our various outreach vehicles such as the website, Facebook, Constant Contact, and newspaper articles

Internships

Students and others interested in working and learning about museums are welcome.
